EXPLANATION OF EMBLEM

      This emblem symbolizing the history of Decatur County, Kansas depicts important entities in the present and past history of our county. It includes a sod house, first permanent dwelling of the pioneer families who gave birth to an agricultural empire. The wheat and milo heads in the surrounding border are representative of the principal grain crops of the area. The windmill dominates the horizon even today and symbolizes the wise use of waterpower for irrigation and domestic needs.

        A modified long horn steer is typical of the thousands of herds that crossed this county on the Ogallala Trail and also reminds us of the importance of livestock in past, present and future economies.

         No logo of our county would be complete without reference to the Last Indian Raid in Kansas occurring here in 1878. The pictured Indian brave brings this to mind. The final item, the sunflowers are typical, and no sight more breath taking than the many fields of golden blossoms in full bloom in late summer.
